Shadowy Narcissus: Valle-Inclán in A Pobra do Caramiñal
BackThis man that resembles John Lennon in disguise is one of Spain's greatest writers. Another writer from Galiza, Manuel Rivas, considers him "the Spanish Joyce." His name is Ramón María del Valle-Inclán (Vilanova de Arousa, 1866 - Santiago de Compostela, 1936). He wrote many short stories - including the collection shown here "Shadowy Garden" - as well as novels and plays. One of his plays, "Bohemian Lights" is very cool and ahead of its time. I decided to visit his shadowy garden, since he lived only a quarter of an hour away from where I live in Boiro. The house is called "Villa Eugenia." A very beautiful (a pity that the video transfer isn't sharper when she appears) and extremely elegant lady, María Antonia Rosende, allowed me to see the garden, which is now cut in half by a cement wall, and then kindly invited me to see the house inside. First we saw the room where Valle would lock himself up for days when writing, a room where María Antonia's son now sleeps. Then she showed me the actual wooden bed where the writer slept, and a large wooden cabinet with a mirror from the same period. By the original bed, on the floor, there was a sea map of the area in which Valle-Inclán was born and lived. The map was appropriately held fast by Jules Verne adventure novels. The house is elegantly furnished and reminds one of the interiors described by Henry James. Valle-Inclán is buried at the Bonaval cemetery near Santiago de Compostela. In the shadow of a large tree, he rests right next to my idol the poet Aurelio Aguirre Galarraga. * Music: "She Is Suffering" by the masterful Welsh band Manic Street Preachers.
