If defense is equal to or higher than attack, then damage will be 0. With all the 30% defense increments on Cliff and Fayt, they defense is really high. Fate's was high enough that he wouldn't be killed but he was still easily interupted. I took control of Cliff instead since he wouldn't be interupted. His defense was higher because of the extra Boots of Prowess.
